Irrigating through Air

An alternative irrigation system from air condensation to reduce loss and increase food production with efficient water management

Use Case

Current limitation of land and water resources are central to the challenge of reducing food crisis. Water availability in agriculture is a growing concern in current food production.Crops ruined by drought could feed more than 80 million people every day for a year. Almost 19% crops are destroyed each year for the last 3 years for lack of proper irrigation,slowing down land productivity by 3.6 times. Water availability has to be increased by 19% within 2050 to feed 9 billion people (FAO) as inadequate rainfall, glacier melt will accelerate water scarcity. Moreover, current Irrigation schemes use about 3500 km3 water per year,of which 74% is evaporated by the crops (world bank).So an alternative system of irrigation,ensuring efficient use of water and farmers affordability,is needed.

Potential

Airgation will reduce crop destruction caused by lack of water,by providing an alternative source of irrigation which is sustainable and cheap to install.It will also ensure proper water management to produce more with less water.19% of crop destruction can be reduced if we can only ensure adequate water supply in food production.Land productivity can be increased by 3.6 times if we can have proper irrigation system in place.Airgation can have a huge impact on areas having higher humidity, especially Southern Asia and Sub Saharan Africa where 63% of global food crisis exist and thus combat food crisis.Not only Asia and Africa, by ensuring adequate water supply and efficient water management in food production, Airgation can directly benefit the farmers and hungry people around the world

Business Case

Adequate water is indispensable for proper growth of plants and crops. But the amount of green water and blue water available is not enough for proper irrigation. Airgation will solve the gap of this inadequate water.This idea is a combination of environmental science and mechanical science. The airgation machine will compile the invisible water particles in the environment and condense them into water and finally spread the water in the cropland. Here the main principle behind the machine is utilizing the presence of humidity and condensed the water particles into water by cooling in the proper temperature. The machine will cost much less than the existing water collection process. The gap of water will be filled in both efficient and effective way.

Objectives:

  1. Reduce crop destruction by 19% by saving the crops that are being destroyed due to lack of proper irrigation
  2. Increase land productivity 3.6 times by converting unirrigated lands into irrigated lands
  3. Increase food production with efficient water management by utilizing lands that are now unsuitable due to lack of irrigation facilities

Our interview with Borkot Ali, a farmer from Kishorgonj. He grows rice in his land all the year round but faces serious challenges to supply enough water to the crops. And situation worsens in Summer. During last Summer he lost almost 40% of his crops due to lack of proper irrigation. He generally collects water from a nearby river in large barrages and use it for irrigation.But with that much water he can barely irrigate even half of his total cropland. As summer advancing with scorching heat and less rain, his tension of feeding his family increases. According to him, if this situation goes on majority of the farmers will have to give up and find other sources of living. Borkot Ali also said he is ready to pay if he can get a sustainable irrigation method that can save his crops.
Borkot Alli is not the only one.Our country, our world is filled with more people like him who are fighting everyday to find a ray of hope. Let's end their sufferings, let's bring an end to hunger.

On time on target: Our Design Statement

Scarcity of water is increasing in every sphere of our life. In the field of agriculture , water is the most important natural resource, but have the most scarcity. With the ever growing population the demand of food is increasing and so the demand of water. Almost 70% of the total green water is used in agriculture, which is still not enough. On the other hand global warming causes unstable climate. As a result we face serious shortage of water in agriculture all over the world which results in reduced food production, ultimately increasing the food crisis keeping more people deprived of food. In future people will struggle more to get water source and food. Water price will be higher and the problem will get more complicated.
Water scarcity is leading towards to drought in many parts of the world. 80% of the damaged caused by drought is directly attributed to agriculture. Almost 19% crops are destroyed every year for lack of proper irrigation slowing down land productivity by 3.6 times. To feed 9 billion people small investments for supplemental irrigation in combination with improved soil, nutrient and crop management can more than double the food production. A sustainable source of water can tackle the water scarcity issue and proper water management in field can ensure food security by producing more with less water.Therefore feeding more people with the same amount of natural resources.

Our Mission

Our mission is to feed 9 billion people by providing a sustainable source of water for irrigation in agricultural field. An alternative, sustainable method of irrigation can reduce crop destruction, increase food production and feed more people out there who are sitting in front of their empty plates, waiting for a miracle.

Our Background

We started our journey as a team when we first heard about the suicide of a farmer here in our home country Bangladesh. The reason behind this incident was his inability to save his crops from drought. We then came across an alternative way of water collection for food production. We are passionate about helping the poor farmers out there and contributing to food production. As a team we have diversified background but we have only one aim: "changing the world for a better future."
