Access to low-cost storage solution

By increasing relative humidity to 90%, each unit of our solution uses less than 1% of the energy it takes to run a refrigerator.

Use Case

“Tomatoes are my livelihood” says Funmilayo, looking across her acre of tomatoes, “but it’s a very tough business.” Funmilayo has been farming tomatoes for 7 years. The proceeds from the back-breaking work have allowed her to support her family and put her two daughters through school. But hard toil is not always rewarded with matching profit as she can currently store her crops for just a few days after harvest. Nigerian farmers grow 1.5 million metric tonnes of tomatoes annually, half of which is lost before reaching the market. RenewDrive wants to change the lives of smallholder farmers like Funmilayo by improving access to low-cost stand-alone storage solutions that increase the shelf-life of tomato from 2 to 15 days.

Potential

By providing Nigerian farmers access to low-cost storage solution to cut down on food loss and increase the shelf-life of tomato by longer days, smallholder farmers will have more harvest to sell, enabling them to increase their annual income by 25%, provide healthy food for the teeming population, and lift millions of people out of poverty.

Business Case

At scale, RenewDrive will generate revenue through cost-effective distribution of our storage solution (“EcoBox”) to smallholder farmers and retailers through cooperatives and direct sales. The profitability of our company depends on our ability to run its operations organically as we expect to create the biggest impact together with strong partnerships with NGOs especially in the agricultural sector. Our business model has three inputs: our people, our operations and innovation. Our intellectual capital is critical to provide innovative solutions. We rely on the ability of our people to innovate and collaborate with each other and our customers to develop value-adding solutions.

Objectives:

  1. To give farmers the needed tools to preserve and sell a greater proportion of an increased tomato yield at a consistent, fair price.
  2. To provide consumers with access to safe, constant, nutritious food.
  3. To create employment mainly for women and youth in rural and semi-urban communities.

Our Mission

Our mission is to make tomato production a sustianable business for smallholder farmers in Nigeria.

Our Background

Tomato farmers in Nigeria experience post-harvest losses of their produce by 50% before reaching the market every year. Smallholder farmers bear the brunt as they can currently store their crops for just a few days after harvest. This means if they do not sell it in time, many produce ends in the landfill. The implications include but not limited to wasted effort, resources and time for the farmers. To address the problem, a team of engineers, scientist and business developer was assembled.
