COPONIA

Connecting people to eat local

A collaborative platform that links stakeholders resources to develop urban agrisystems using hydroponics and aquaponics.

Use Case

Eva leaves in a city and owns a vacant space (roof, terrace...) on which she would like to capitalize. Luis lives in the same city and loves gardening. He is interested in eco-friendly agricultural models, but he needs space to develop his own cultivation. H&A is a company specialized in hydroponics and aquaponics that wants to share its expertise. They all decide to visit Coponia website, that they heard to be a collaborative platform connecting actors in the field of urban farming. They register, choosing their type of profile (farmer, owner…), and connect their resources. As a result, Eva rents space to Luis who buys systems to H&A. Luis can be helped by microcredit investors met on the platform. Finally, Luis can also use our platform to sell his production to urban consumers.

Potential

In 2050 we expect 65% of the people to live in the cities. With traditional cultures that means 14 million tons of food imported in the cities each day to feed them. Our Coponia platform will enable to grow healthy food directly in the city in a collaborative and more efficient way. Indeed hydroponics and aquaponics systems saves more than 70% water and produce two to three times more than traditional agriculture. Our system is low tech. Thus, by training experts all around the world you can easily expand the project in any city with sunny weather. Latin America, Africa and Asia are regions facing the highest urban concentrations and malnutrition rate. They are so many places where we could quickly develop Coponia units.

Business Case

For the different services offered on our Coponia platform, we plan to charge users at different levels. We create value for Farmers, giving them resources to develop an agribusiness, but also for Investors, that are able to invest in new profitable projects, or to loan money for free to support alternative food production. Thus we first plan to charge a percentage of the initial capital invested on our platform. Coponia also enables Farmers to sell their production directly on the platform, and provides marketing support. Farmers then pay fees for these services. As we help Owners to optimize their property, they have to pay fees on the first rental. Finally, we find customers for hydroponics experts, who pay us fees to sign up to our platform.

Objectives:

  1. Increase fresh and healthy food production by developing a more productive model in cities vacant spaces
  2. Reduce food production environmental impact by promoting an eco-friendly production model, close to its consumers
  3. Create new green jobs

Team Agricultura Urbana Colaborativa

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Our Team

Our Mission

Our ambition is to promote urban eco-friendly farming technologies, in order to increase the access to affordable, nutritious and safe food for urban consumers.

Our Background

Three students of EDHEC - a top French Business School - joined two members of the Argentinian company “La Ciudad Posible”, specialized in sustainable development projects: a political specialist and a geographer. We are complementary and led by the same ambition to develop alternatives to produce better, safer, and more ecological food. Currently located in Buenos Aires, we first thought of a system applicable in this city and then realized that our concept could be spread all over the world.
