‘SITUATION OF WASTE MANAGEMENT IN YANGON CITY OF MYANMAR’

SHORT BRIEF ON YANGON CITY
• Former capital of country Myanmar
• Area- 759 km2
• Population- 6.2 million (2017)
• 33 Townships in Yangon

PRIMARY BODY RESPONSIBLE FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

• Pollution Control and Cleansing Department (PCCD)

Responsibilities-
a. Daily management
b. Pollution control (Progressing)

FACTS AND FIGURES

Total Waste Generation- 1,690 tonnes/day
Total Waste Collection- 1,550 tonnes/day
Gap- 140 tonnes, which share for recycling and illegal dumping
Organic waste- 76%
Plastic- 10 %
Papers and textiles- 0.1%
Others- 10%

Monthly fee for waste collection service-
• Old suburbs- 300 kyat per month per household
• Sub-urban- 450 kyat per month per household
• Central business district- 600 kyat per month per household
• Charges from commercial Centers, hotels, etc. are based on sizes, kind of facilities, waste types and others related.

WASTE COLLECTION METHODS
1. Collection by carts and trucks through Bell Ringing System
2. Collection at Street Dumps Yard
3. Kerb side collection

WASTE SEPARATION
Waste is mainly separated as WET and DRY. But all those separated wastes are loaded in the same vehicle for transportation.

WASTE COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTATION VEHICLES
• 13 kinds of trucks used for waste transportation
• Number of trucks available is 297 and capacity of truck varies from 2-8 tonnes per trip.
• Many trucks are too old and often, vehicle breakdown do happen.

SITUATION OF WASTE RECYCLING

• 86 tonnes per day generated waste is recycled. Valuable recyclables are stored at household level and sold to the nearby junkshops.

• Emission of CH4 from open dumping - 22.88 kg of CH4/tonnes
• Direct GHG emission from mixed waste open dumping - 480.48 kg of CO2-eq/tonnes of mix waste
• GHG emission from open dumping from monthly disposed waste - 22,342 Tonnes of CO2-eq/month

• Direct GHG emissions from recycling - 866.42 kg of CO2-eq/tonnes of mixed recyclables
• Avoided GHG emissions from recycling via materials recovery- 2646.79 kg of CO2-eq/tonnes of mixed recyclables

Innowaste: Helps You Grow More

Our Mission

Our team believes that the concept of sustainable food systems, in which applied recycling and reuse of waste from consumption contribute to an input platform to produce new food and foster a circular economy model. Therefore, our mission is to combat waste pollution in the peri-urban and urban areas of Yangon, Myanmar, whilst tackling increasing rates of urban and peri-urban food insecurity through enhancing the productivity of peri-urban farmers, through peri-urban agriculture.

Our Background

Our enterprise addresses waste pollution in Yangon, whilst improving the productivity of peri-urban cultivators. We incentivise the cultivators to collect waste, which they give to us in exchange for tokens. They can then ‘buy’ agricultural inputs and technologies from us such as compost packages and plastic bottle-based garrafas systems made from waste. Our concept is strongly sustainable and we believe the Thought For Food Community will present us with a dynamic environment.
