Integrated Farmer Support Platform (IFSP)

Quality agricultural extension; with customized content to impact every user.

Making use of advancements in communication technology to enable reliable access to extension & business services to smallholder farmers.

Use Case

Garu is one of over 50 communities served by 1 extension officer; resulting in very poor & inconsistent extension service to farmers. Alternatively, IFSP allows relative self-service that enables farmers access reliable extension service when it can achieve the most impact (right before they carry out activities on their fields). Issaka is one of several farmers there who cultivated less acreage last year even though they could have done more. This was because, the tractor service they requested couldn't ascertain the volume of the order and didn't want to risk traveling for little work. With IFSP, individual requests placed by Isaka, his colleagues & those from neighboring communities could have been collated and presented to service providers - driving up their bargaining power.

Potential

At about 40% or less productivity, smallholders account for 80% of food produced in developing countries. If at 40%, they account for this much, we can only imagine their potential impact on global food security with increased productivity.A key obstacle impeding higher productivity is their continued acceptance of outdated & non-productive practices such as seed recycling. These practices can only be changed with the introduction of alternative farming technologies via EXTENSION.From our pre-pilot field trials, data from our sample of 200-farmer households has been instrumental in informing revisions to IFSP to make it more impactful to users. Our scaled pilot, scheduled for later this year will look to further test IFSP under a wider range of agronomic content & support services.

Business Case

Starting off as a free service, we plan to begin charging fees after a year or two via the following channels. 1. Input dealers will be charged to advertise their goods & products in stock on the platform. 2. Service providers such as warehouses, transport, processors & tractor operators will be charged transaction fees of 2 - 5% for deals facilitated via the platform. 3. De-personalized data collected via the platform could be sold to financial institutions and insurers to facilitate the design of targeted products. 4. Platform could be leased to partner agencies and development organizations at a fee to conduct surveys and administer questionnaires to users

Objectives:

  1. Improve productivity of smallholders through exposure to new knowledge & yield-impacting farming practices; via quality extension service.
  2. Improve operational & business efficiency within the value chain by interconnecting relevant actors & enhancing support service delivery.
  3. Build a national network of community-based agriculture volunteers through which the IFSP Intervention can be scaled up with ease.

Team Big Smallholders

Tamale, Ghana

Our Mission

We are a team of budding researchers who recognize access to information/new knowledge & the facilitation of support services as two of the most critical cornerstones to improving livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Our aim is to leverage already-available community-based resources (both human and material), driven by model scientific knowledge and powered by advancements in data & communication technology to enhance productivity & profitability of smallholder farmers.

Our Background

As a group of 5 from different parts of Ghana, our individual experiences and common love for field work have been vital in shaping the perspectives of our ideas. We chanced on TFF while working on data from our pre-trial and decided it would be a great learning & networking opportunity to feed our goals of launching a pilot by year's end & full launch in 2019.At which time there would be enough data to facilitate lobbying for partnerships & funding; as we grow to become a paid service.
