Nutribugs

Feeding new generations

It promotes the consumption and breeding of insects in rural areas and elaborate food products rich in proteins such as bars and cookies.

Use Case

Manuel Morales lives in a rural area of Tepecoyo, El Salvador and breeds some poultry since he does not have the economic resources such as land, adequate facilities to have a farm so it benefits him that Nutribugs trains him on the breeding of insects in its land since it does not need big space and big facilities for its care and neither the big investment to feed the insects. These insects to be dehydrated and grinding them into flour to add corn flour to make tortillas and increase the protein content of their diet and also sell insects as raw material for us to produce nutritional food products. In this way, Manuel Morales will be benefited economically and nutritionally.

Potential

Insect Breeding brings economic, environmental and nutritional benefits. Because big insects are not needed in the breeding of insects, they use 83% less space than the breeding, being this an advantage since in any space they can be raised, on the other hand they are fed with much less food than cattle and breeding faster and in greater quantity making it a more economical option, it also has benefits with the environment since it generates 85% less greenhouse gases than other breeding animals. So if the insects were raised on a large scale in the world would meet the demand for protein, vitamins and minerals, at a much lower cost to the economy and the environment. Therefore, making products with insects is profitable and is a great alternative to feed future generations by 2050.

Business Case

NUTRIBUGS promotes by means of trainings on the breeding and consumption and of insects that provide economic benefits because they can be raised at an economically and environmentally low cost; to raise insects 85% less land is used to obtain a kilo of protein and 80% less food per kilo of useful mass than conventional livestock. This benefits low-income families in rural areas to be able to raise them and have an economic benefit. Products for health and home products for health and home, products to enrich and make products with them, because of this NUTRIBUGS a price more accessible than other bars and protein biscuits in the market.

Objectives:

  1. Encourage the consumption of insects as a source of protein in El Salvador and other third world countries.
  2. Implement the breeding of insects in rural areas for economic and nutritional benefit of low-income families.
  3. Elaborate food products with protein based on insect flour.

Our Mission

Being able to feed 9 billion people by 2050 through the breeding of insects, we want to encourage the consumption of them and the development of high-protein nutritional products such as protein bars and cookies based on flour made of insects.

Our Background

As a team, we came up with a protein bar that provides not only essential proteins to people, but also contributes to reduce malnutrition in poor diets and lack of resources. Our"BugBar"will be elaborated with flour made of insects, such as mealworms and crickets. We pretend to obtain a bar with a high protein content that is able to minimize food products from farm animals such as dairy. Aiming for an alternative source of protein that not only tastes great but its eco-friendly and sustainable.
