ICT For Agri

Turning Farmer to Expert

Our Communication and marketing platform allow farmers and agriculture communities create and share value to increase productivity and sales

Use Case

There are 12 Million farmers in Nepal who farm primitively and struggle to make living from agriculture. Smallholder farmers lack information on commercial farming practice such as management of land, irrigation, mechanization, disease/pest and optimum use of seeds and fertilizers causing very less crop yield. With no idea of real market price for their products, farmers are often exploited by mid traders. The big market problem is the huge information gap. As a solution, ICT For Agri (IFA) has developed mobile based platform called Krishi Guru that provide localized and contextual agriculture advisories on pest disease, market price and weather forecast. Also IFA connects farmers to market traders, experts, input suppliers and agri organizations through android app and SMS service.

Potential

The major expected outcome of the concept is to help small holder farmers yield more crops, gain more profit, receive climate smart crop advisories, get knowledge of emerging agriculture input supplies, their use and connection to nearby input suppliers and help farmers plan planting/harvesting certain vegetables as per the price trend in market. Appropriate management of data and delivering localised content in local language helps the farmer make timely, action oriented decisions on their farms. As of now, 230K farmers are using our platform. This concept will directly endorse two UNSDGs : Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture AND Goal 13. Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Business Case

The end user farmers will access most agriculture information free of cost through mobile application. The revenue generated from input supplies from agribusiness companies to market their products and services to targeted farmers (for good purpose) is one of the revenue stream. We have held meeting with largest commercial telecom here in Nepal called Axiata Ncell to come up with ‘Farmer Phone’ where telecom bundles our application in Ncell’s sim. Farmer will pay for some premium contents from mobile balance and revenue generated will be shared. The other revenue stream is to take consultancy fee from I/NGOs to develop ICT platform charge capable of mass SMS messaging and feedback collection, Crop advisory development and dissemination and SMS charge.

Objectives:

  1. Improve production yield by providing localized and contextual climate smart crop advisories in local language
  2. Connect for farmer to Agriculture expert, market traders, input suppliers and local organizations to take actionable decision on farm
  3. Make farmer resilient to adverse effect of climate change by advising them to adopt climate smart agriculture practices
