Big Data for Small Farms

Use Case

The fields have been freshly plowed. The furrows run straight and deep. Yet, Shiva who has received a text message is waiting before he sows the seeds. The SMS, which was delivered in his native language, has told him to wait a week before sowing his crops. Elsewhere other farmers are receiving automated voice calls telling them that their crops are at risk of a pest attack, based on weather conditions and crop stage. Meanwhile Shiva’s state government is getting price forecasts for essential commodities three months in advance for planning for the Minimum Support Price. Welcome to digital agriculture, where we use Artificial Intelligence, Satellite Imagery and Cloud Computing to empower small-holder farmers to increase their income through higher crop yield and greater price control.

Potential

Shifting weather patterns such as increase in temperature, changes in precipitation levels, and ground water density, can affect farmers, especially those who are dependent on timely rains for their crops. Leveraging the cloud and AI to predict advisories for sowing, pest control and commodity pricing, is a major initiative towards creating increased income and providing stability for the agricultural community. Indian agriculture has been traditionally rain dependent and climate change has made farmers extremely vulnerable to crop loss. Insights from AI through the agriculture life cycle will help reduce uncertainty and risk in agriculture operations. Use of AI in agriculture can potentially transform the lives of millions of farmers in India and world over.

Business Case

In the forecasting space, customers like the government & insurance companies can pay to have access to the company’s API & its daily forecasting updates. To make our tools accessible to farmers in initial years we will partner with farmers’ cooperatives & organisations, giving us access to a large number of farmers who can subscribe to our decision support software. Advisories will be sent to participating farmers through automated calls/messages in regional languages apart from the web/mobile apps thus making sure that no farmer is left out. In India's predominantly agrarian $300 billion+ economy that sizes upto 13.7% of her GDP, just a phone capable of receiving text messages will enable us to empower farmers to increase their income through higher crop yield and greater price control.

Objectives:

  1. Empower small-holder farmers to increase their income through higher crop yield and greater price control.
  2. Reduce the impact of climate related shocks and pest infestations that the farmers face by predicting them in advance.
  3. Work with the Indian government towards realising its aim of doubling farmers' income by 2022.

Our Background

As humanity balloons to nearly 10 billion by 2050, the planet stubbornly stays the same size, meaning the same amount of land must support way more people. By 2050, the demand for food is expected to outpace production by 70%. To combat that & the adverse effects of climate change, farmers need to access better data which isn’t the case due to low technology adoption and access rates, especially in India. For us, this is an opportunity to positively impact the world by changing that.
