They take yoghurt a lot as a snack and usually as a light meal replacer due to its proven health benefits (4-5 times a week). Whiles young, she missed opportunity to get covered by Vitamin A supplementation. She complains she cannot afford supplements on the market. Ama and her child are advised by the doctor to take foods rich in vitamin A after a few illness. Ama wants a naturally flavoured eating yoghurt that has a natural dose of vitamin A and dietary fibres to include in their weekly menu which is not usual of the yoghurt she loves to take. Ama needs sweetpot yoghurt to enjoy the benefits of yoghurt, whiles being assured vitamin A.

Potential

Orange sweetpotatoes is incorporated yoghurt, a delicacy for all ages to enhance its nutritional status. Sweetpot yoghurt will improve nutritional quality of widely consumed snack trending in Ghana by supplementing with Vitamin A and dietary fibres. Satisfying hunger due to its thickened nature whiles promoting healthier snacking as a functional food is an interesting part. Our solution is scalable to other Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) prone areas in Africa and a potential adaptable food-based approach for VAD syndrome, targeted at increasing vitamin A uptake by the public using a cheaper vitamin A source. Value creation from an underutilized crop, to reduce postharvest losses due to low patronage faced by sweetpotato farmers is another agricultural impact.

Business Case

Yoghurt, a multinational delicacy is projected globally to grow to $107 billion by 2023 and with a CAGR of around 4.6%. Yoghurt is the 2nd most popularly consumed dairy product after evaporated milk in Ghana. Our prototype testing is completed with appreciable consumer likeness and willingness to purchase product on the market. The target market includes children, students and adults who will be reached though collaborations with over 500 retailers in schools, universities, supermarkets and grocery shops. With economies of scale, sweetpot yoghurt is expected to be affordable due to the combination of milk base with a cheaper ingredient.

Objectives:

  1. To introduce to the market a nutritive, affordable and healthy Vitamin- A enhanced yoghurt choice for healthier snacking.
  2. To introduce an adaptable food based approach for alleviation of Vitamin A deficiency syndrome in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  3. To create value from underutilized crop, boost the market for sweetpotato farmers to contribute reducing their post-harvest losses.
