FarmBuddy

The more you know, the more you grow.

FarmBuddy is a platform that helps farmers in developing countries improve productivity while bridging the information gap for financiers.

Use Case

Smallholder farmers suffer from lack of access to knowledge and financing. They often never had training in agricultural practices and their knowledge on farming mainly comes from their close entourage. This leads to an inappropriate use of inputs, bad monitoring and low productivity that endanger their ability to repay loans which they take to afford seasonable inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and pesticides. On the other side, financiers often are in the dark about the risk profiles of these farmers and therefore price higher interest rates on agricultural loans or are unwilling to lend. FarmBuddy helps both parties by providing critical information to improve productivity as well as create transparency on the respective farmers’ performance to reduce the business risk for financiers.

Potential

Globally, FarmBuddy will increase food production by improving farmers’ productivity via access to relevant information and training and creating a transparent system for financiers to fund agricultural products. By distributing knowledge of best-practices in farming to the grassroot level we can tremendously impact both the quality and quantity of farming and give greater returns to farmers. We aim to make farming a lucrative opportunity. Paired with the transparency on farmers’ performance, this improved yield will positively affect farmers’ risk profile thereby giving them access to more and cheaper capital which in turn can be reinvested to improve productivity even further. This on aggregate level will help feed an increasing number of people and create a more sustainable agriculture.

Business Case

FarmBuddy is a free-to-use app for farmers that is bundled with loan products. It improves farm productivity by providing access to critical information such as good farming practices, choice of appropriate inputs or weather forecasts while giving them a holistic farm management system. By integrating inputs (land size, soil type, crop, etc.) the farmer will be advised on how to improve his return. Penetration of smartphones in developing countries already provides the infrastructure. Lenders pay an annual fee to access the data on the app which will be used to develop detailed risk profiles of each farmer. By making the use of the app a mandatory prerequisite for farmers to receive a loan, financiers can manage their business risk better effectively creating more lending for good farmers.

Objectives:

  1. Improve smallholder farmer productivity and increase their income through knowledge sharing, training and efficient farm management.
  2. Reduce risk of lending to agricultural projects by providing relevant information on farm-level activities to predict farmer performance.
  3. Increase the attractiveness of agriculture as a profession as well as an industry.

Meet Ankit, our typical user

Meet Ankit, our favorite farmer!
Ankit is an Indian smallholder farmer living in a remote village. He owns 2 acres of land on which he grows wheat. He never had any technical training on agricultural practices, hence he cultivates his crop based on the knowledge shared by his peers in his village.
Ankit needs to take a loan every season in order to buy the necessary inputs (seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, small equipments...) to grow wheat. Given he doesn't have any training, his seasonal yield is much lower than what it could be due the quality of his soil. Therefore, Ankit is not making enough money to live from his agricultural activity. He has to practice a second job to be able to feed his family and he is rarely able to reimburse his loan.
FarmBuddy is here to change Ankit's life, to bring him financial stability and allow him to make a living out of his hard work in the field.
