Nutritious food for everyone

Likabs would empower peri-urban and rural farmers to farm snails for increased consumption, nutrition and profitability of communities.

Use Case

Snail meat is a popular delicacy in several parts of Africa, and across the world. Its nutritional benefits make it a favorite in the diet of many households to solve malnutrition and other health issues. However due to population explodes, supply of snails cannot meet the demand therefore making it inaccessible, unaffordable and unsafe. Now, about 11% of the world’s population are chronically undernourished and many as 1.2 million Ghanaians are considered food insecure and undernourished. Our initiative enables Vitalis a snail farmer to improved daily diet, get ready market to increase income, enjoy regular training, and starter Snail insurance scheme. However, our mobile app will enhance farms monitoring and coordination of buyers of snail products such as snail meat, and shells.

Potential

In Ghana, Nigeria and around the world snail meat is popular, but traditionally these are gathered from the forest during the wet season. Considerably, snail populations have declined primarily due to the impact of human activities as deforestation, pesticide use, bush fires. Likabs would help change the trend of seasonal harvesting of snails to a sustainable organic farming of snails. This will help increase the consumption of snail meat, increase income, create jobs and encourage 1.8 billion across the globe into agribusiness and reduce the health issues of communities’ due to its rich protein iron, low fat and cholesterol level. Likabs snail insurance scheme would harness farmers readiness and commitment to a sustainable snails farming.

Business Case

Likabs will empower households’ in communities to startup snail farms feeding them with vegetables, tubers, fruits from homes gardens. Generally, snails are environment-friendly and capital, labor, inputs is low as compared to other types of livestock like poultry, cattle. Likabs will supply snails’ eggs to farmers and at maturity farmers exchanges snails for income at Likabs hub where snails are then processed and packaged into snail meat for local and international consumption by collaborating the supply chain through a mobile app. Also, to ensure safe environment for the ecosystem, removed shells will be sold to pharmaceuticals, poultry feed mills, decor industry and a percentage of the proceeds will be used to start Snail insurance product for each farmer under the programme.

Objectives:

  1. To replace wild snail gathering with rational production technique
  2. Increase snails’ consumption to mitigate malnutrition
  3. Improve the income level of peri-urban and rural communities
