SunRice

An Extra Bowl of Rice, For Life

SunRice aims to eradicate the crop loss during drying while empowering the farmers through its mobile rice drying service.

Use Case

Around 30% of the world's rice is wasted during the drying process due to traditional practices used by poor small farm owners, currently in debt or underpaid. Their poverty stops them from buying proper drying technology which could recoup the 30% loss and help them escape the poverty cycle. We help them by providing a complimentary drying service, using the solar bubble, a solar powered dryer. With SunRice, farmers would be able to reduce loss by 30%, and produce higher quality grains. This results in a 50% more income which they rightfully deserve and can help them resolve previous debts.Small farmers are also exposed to new technology previously unencountered to maximise their drying efficiency, increase their income while providing enough food to feed 9 billion people before 2050.

Potential

30% of the world’s rice is wasted through the drying process. At this rate, population growth will exceed food production growth by 2050, resulting in famine, overpopulation and poverty. With SunRice, the loss will be recuperated and rice demand will be met, putting less strain on food security, improving food availability and accessibility. Farmers and millers will also enjoy an increase in income. As a rough projection, SunRice will empower 7.6 thousand farmers, save 60 million tonnes of rice while feeding 12.3 million people annually by 2024-just 7 years from now. With the scalable nature of SunRice’s business model, we aim to expand to other rice producing, then grain-producing countries while investing in R&D to innovate the solar bubble–widening its impact in both breadth and depth.

Business Case

SunRice is a mobile and complimentary rice-drying service provider. SunRice travels from farm to farm during the harvest season with the solar bubble. Our daily operation is a simple 3 step cycle: bringing the solar bubbles to the farmers to dry the rice for free -> buying the rice from them -> transporting and selling the rice to the millers. We bridge the gap between the technological product and its market. SunRice’s costs would include the purchase of the solar bubble and our commitment to paying the farmers 50% upfront which ensures their financial security. Our revenue stems from the 25% margin between our purchase of the rice from farmers at market price and the sale of rice to the millers. Solar bubble dried grain is of higher quality and can be sold at a higher price to millers.

Objectives:

  1. Reduce food wastage. With 500 billion tonnes of rice consumed yearly, 30% of rice harvested is loss when drying. SunRice aims to save that.
  2. Empower the food insecure.Ironically, rice farmers themselves are stuck in poverty.SunRice is committed to ensure their financial stability.
  3. Zero Hunger. The grains we save will enable food production to sustainably feed the 9+ Billion people before, during and after 2050.

Our Mission

As a team of university students with rice as a huge part of our culture, this global problem not only affects us but also our friends and family. Thus, SunRice was created with two main goals – to reduce food wastage while empowering the food insecure. At our core, we are here to tackle food security by alleviating food shortage, rewarding farmers fairly and innovate a fragmented industry by modernising farming techniques. Let’s feed 9+ billion people by 2050 together!

Our Background

We are a team of SEA undergrads who are deeply committed to solving food-grain security as grains are a basic necessity to everyone. We've all put time aside to bring this project to life as we believe SunRice solves the problem of the century and impacts the poorest of the society. We joined TFF hoping to catalyze launching our social enterprise that also lifts the very food insecure small farm owners out of extreme poverty. We want to impact by helping the most people we can on this planet.
