Eco-friendly hydroponic food production unit

SMART FARM SMART LIFE

Low cost, resilient and eco-friendly food production units to promote agriculturally sustainable and productive urban setups

Use Case

The Eden Hub targets a cooperative of individuals, private corporations or associations that seek to facilitate and enable sizable food production in urban and peri-urban setups. In addition, SACCOS and commercial farmers with the ability of supplying to grocery stores, mega-retail outlets and restaurants serve as potential users. The food production units are contained systems. As such have high capacity for automation to reduce labour costs. With social impact as a core pillar of our enterprise, schools serve as potential users. The food production units shall be used to generate food for lunch feeding programs to support schools in Kenya and additionally offer a visual and practical teaching aid for the Kenyan curriculum in concepts such as bio-systems and ecology.

Potential

Overall growth of the world's population could add another 2.5 billion people to urban populations by 2050, with close to 90% of the increase in Asia and Africa. The Eden Hub’s innovation offers the value of reliability and sustainability for urban setups as the food production units allow food production without expanding on the remaining arable space. The Eden Hub’s food production units merges food production and consumption in one place hence shortening the food supply chain. This will translate to more income to the urban farmer and more food for consumption. If executed appropriately, The Eden Hub’s innovation can significantly contribute to effective waste management, ultimately resulting into clean, sustainable and agriculturally productive urban setups.

Business Case

We are in pursuit of championing, developing and providing low cost, resilient and eco-friendly food production units that integrate hydroponics and aquaponics . The food production units are designed using recycled construction waste materials and plastics. They are readily, locally available and also greatly reduce the cost of constructing the food production units by about 65-75%. We seek to commence by running a location survey to identify and map out potential urban sites. Upon running a pilot program which will serve as a model for economic feasibility, we envisage seeking for corporate partners to scale operations. Our revenue streams will be generated from direct sales to large scale farmer cooperatives and SACCOS and associations involved in food production for urban communities.

Objectives:

  1. To develop an agriculturally productive and economically profitable urban farming solution that is highly resource efficient.
  2. To scale urban agriculture by combating the challenge of limited arable space and under-utilization of agricultural technology.
  3. To socially impact the community by championing and elevating sustainable, eco-friendly and food secure urban and peri-urban setups.
