Protein-rich algae (chlorella) are suggested to have potential as a nutritional supplement.

Use Case

Food price crisis impacted a large number of people, mostly in the developing world. In 2016 and 2017 the number of malnourished people globally was close to 8 billion. Short-term supply shocks and increases in production costs, as well as increases in demand for food, are suggested to have played a significant role in price increases. One solution with a high degree of potential is the so-called “protein rich algae food”. This practice involves growing and processing simple microorganisms called algae, which can be used in a number of ways. Algae farming yield high unsaturated fat based oil, protein-rich food source for human and can be used for animal feed supplements. Algae do not compete for agricultural lands, thereby affecting the food supply and reducing prices.

Potential

Algae are suggested to have potential as a nutritional supplement. In this project chlorella has been selected as a source for food. We are extracting the oil from the dried chlorella. The oil of chlorella contains high unsaturated fats which is good for human health. After the oil extraction the remaining portion is rich in protein which we are using for preparation of food products like algae protein powder, algae flour, breads, milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, different kinds of soft drinks etc. chlorella yield high unsaturated fat based oil, protein-rich food source for human and can be used for animal feed supplements. Apart from this chlorella also have excellent medication values like it is good for heart, mental sharpness, blood sugar stabilization, liver supporting etc.

Our Background

Siddharth Jain, PhD from IIT Roorkee, having Research experience of NUS Singapore and UoA Canada. has done much work in algae in world-famous laboratories. we are doing work here to extract the lipids and protein from algae and to convert that into food for humans as well as for animals. as algae (chlorella) is highly productive as well very nutritious, this would be used to cope up the need for future food challenge and therefore we are participating.
