ACTUALIZING COMMERCIAL FOOD PRODUCTION THROUGH FARMING SMALL AND THINKING BIG

food for all is achievable when farmers have the resources to produce more and consumers have what it takes to afford what were produced.

Use Case

Most low income earners and subsistence farmers who constitute 70% of the agrarian population were gainfully involved in agriculture in the past, but have shift interest as a result of incessant failure experienced in agriculture business in the era of climate change. The Nigerian government as a way to actualize the green alternatives to economic growth, embraces the Anchored Borrowers Programme which is faced with some challenges ranging from inadequate extension personnel, side selling due to hike in value produce as against the earlier price agreed on by offtakers, no check and balance to supervised how cooperative utilize the fund and how farms were managed, some capital cost and variable cost were not factored in the programme on who bears them, poor insurance policy.

Potential

It is belief that increasing human activities and industrial agriculture are the major causes of environmental disorder resulting to imbalance of our ecosystem causing flood, drought, erosion and increased temperature affecting the abundance of food for all. It is also belief that to curb these menaces the 1st hand approach is to promote small scale sustainable eco-friendly agriculture. Our Mission is to promote a specially design commercial agriculture that embraces small scale farming that enable an eco-friendly activities and to care about how rural farmers, low income earners and farming families involved in small scale farming may be more bankable, more proactive in policy decision and more economically, financially and socially organized when partnering with other stakeholders.

REASONS FOR START UP
Rural community in Nigeria are characterised by poor people who are lacking voice to express their travail and are vulnerable to environmental, health and social hazard. Most of them were gainfully involved in agriculture in the past, but have shift interest as a result of incessant failure experienced in agriculture business in the era of climate change. The government as a way to actualize the green alternatives to economic growth and commercialize food production, embraces the Anchored Borrowers Programme which is faced with some challenges ranging from side selling due to hike in value of produce as against the earlier price agreed on by off takers initially, there was no check and balance to supervised how cooperative utilize the fund and how farms were managed, delay in the supply of inputs, some capital cost and variable cost were not factored in or well spelt on who bears them like land clearing, irrigation facilities, costs of getting the meeting venue, cost of supervision by consultant, poor insurance policy and lastly there were no commitment charges by the farmers to affirm their credibility, accountability and enthusiasm about the programme.
The aim of this proposal is to set up a Project Management Team to ameliorate hitches faced in the anchored borrowers programme by providing a work plan geared towards profitable and sustainable integrated farming business most especially for arable crops and livestock production selected in the agriculture transformation/value chain programme of most Africa countries like Nigeria i.e. Rice, Maize, Soybean, Groundnut, Sorghum turmeric and Cassava. Aside from the above crops we look forward to crop indigenous vegetables like amaranthus (local name “efo tete”, cocorus olitoris (local name “ewedu”, celosia (local name “efo sokoyokoto” and Telfaria occitendalis (flute pumpkin local name “ugu”) during the dry season and to engage in livestock production of poultry and goats to ease loan payback.
