Voice of the farmer

Increasing food supply to the end user, by enabling farmers to use an eco-friendly low-cost cold storage chamber that reduces food wastage.

Use Case

There are more than 100 million marginal farmers (who make less than 1000 USD per annum) in India who are at the bottom of the agri-business hierarchy. They need a solution for storing harvested produce (and sustaining its shelf life) without spending more amount on the raw materials. This means, that their needs must be satisfied using locally sourced materials and a simple straightforward design. An eco-friendly cold storage chamber that can be constructed with a basic skill set is the solution to the farmer's need to store perishable fruit and vegetable produce. This can be tested easily in hot and dry weather conditions that are common to Asia and Africa.

Potential

By increasing the food availability to the consumer, we are facilitating an increased supply of food. Thus, we are solving the problem of food wastage and food insecurity, subsequently feeding more people by 2050. Starting with India, we will create an impact on more than 15 million children followed by impacting under-nourished children population in other countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Niger, South Sudan Papua New Guinea etc.

Business Case

We generate revenue from royalty earned from each Baraf-e chamber built by a marginal farmer/ group of farmers. By partnering with farmers cooperatives (heads of clusters), we utilize network effects to scale up the implementation over time and over a large geographical area. Costs will be incurred in increasing awareness of the need for Baraf-e chambers to the heads of farmer cooperatives.

Objectives:

  1. By 2020 December, we will build 2000 Baraf-e chambers across Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
  2. Feed 5 million under-nourished children by 2020.
  3. To improve the temperature reduction within Baraf-e chambers by more than 20 F to further sustain the ideal shelf-life of vegetable produce.

Our Team

Our Mission

We are DHWANI, a team motivated to transform lives by implementing a sustainable affordable solution to prevent food wastage. We stand for food security and improving a farmer's quality of life. We present Baraf-e, an eco-friendly, sustainable, low energy cold storage solution that not only stores the farmer's produce but also generates additional income to the farmer. Our team's objective is to positively impact the lives of 4.5 million farmers and feed 9+ billion lives .

Our Background

We are a group of highly motivated individuals hailing from an agrarian economy who care about the plight of farmers in India. We are participating in this challenge to raise awareness and raise funds to enable us to solve the crisis of food wastage due to non-availability of a cold storage solution requiring low investment. We want to stop food wastage, empower farmers to build eco-friendly cold storage chambers and increase the shelf-life of freshly harvested produce.
