Use Case

Agriculture that depends on rainfall represents about 60% of the total area under cultivation in Africa. This generally means that “No Rain, No food” applies for millions of people. Farmers across the world lose close to 30% of their produce due to delayed and unpredictable rains. Therefore, access to sufficient water supplies is essential for sustainable farming. Without water, crops die, farmers lose their income and people go hungry. Furthermore, most farmers cannot practice agriculture during the dry season due to lack of water. Our product targets farmers who are plagued by these problems; by making irrigation and pumping of water easier, cheaper and more efficient. Irrigated agriculture can be highly productive with low risk and is a sure way of increasing yields.

Potential

With Watertap Solar powered irrigation pump, farmers will benefit from a cheaper and more efficient irrigation system. This will allow them to be less dependent on rain and thereby reduce losses caused by delayed rains. Moreover, it provides farmers with an opportunity to practice agriculture during the dry seasons. This will greatly increase the annual yields of farmers and consequently boost their earnings. Watertap will also be a great alternative to diesel powered pumps. Since it uses solar power, it has very little operational costs. Funds which could have otherwise been used in purchasing diesel can be further reinvested in agriculture. The pump can be used for a variety of applications from watering animals to providing water for fish ponds.

Business Case

Watertap offers a great business potential for the global market. Our short-term goal is to target small scale farmers and to provide them with a pump that is efficient and affordable. In the long-term, we hope to size up our operations and target large scale farmers by improving our solar irrigation system so that it can be able to satisfactorily cater to hundreds of acres of land. We will be able to earn revenue through direct sales. Our major contributors will be solar cells companies where we will be able to negotiate for solar panels which form the basis for our product. The price of solar cells has greatly reduced in the recent years; and is projected to reduce further in the years to come. We hope to take advantage of these developments and provide farmers with an amazing product.

Objectives:

  1. To prevent losses caused by unpredictable and delayed rains by providing farmers with an efficient solar powered irrigation
  2. To allow farmers to practice agriculture throughout the year by providing an easy and efficient solar powered irrigation
  3. To provide an alternative to diesel powered pumps thereby reduce operational costs and environmental pollution
