RAICES

We empower rural women and promoting agricultural gardens.

Raices is a methodology that achieves a true economic empowerment of rural women and creates more productive agricultural gardens.

Use Case

Maria is a Colombian rural woman who depended economically on her husband, she wanted to sell the products of their agricultural gardens but she did not know how, she believed that she could only do it through the NGOs that came to the region but they were soon leaving, and neither did it have a cell phone with the latest technology or enough internet to use one of the many applications that allow them to sell the products. Raíces started working with María and a group of women from the region, and through our methodology they themselves created their strategy to make more productive agricultural gardens, now they exchange products among them and sell them directly without any intermediary, Maria said: "We realized that we can do it alone." This is true empowerment.

Potential

In Colombia there are more than 5.3 million rural women, statistically rural women have less access to land and credits, but most of them have a small piece of land that is usually used as agricultural gardens for survival. But these small spaces have great potential, they are being a world policy in the fight against hunger and food security, It is also sustainable agriculture and friendly to the environment, because they are small scale products can be completely free of chemicals and also promote local economies. Imagine the impact we would have if we empower those 5.3 million rural women to take advantage of their gardens, we would achieve a true rural and food transformation.

Business Case

The rural women with whom we work have realized that there are many ways to market their products, just go to the villages so that hotels and supermarkets buy them. However we know that in the main cities of Colombia these products are also highly demanded because they are chemical-free. In addition, the government is constantly offering alliances for the rural population. The problem is that rural women do not have access to information from major cities. We seek in a second stage to be an information match between the main cities and the rural women, not through an application but through a platform that sends them text messages and facilitates such alliances, for which we will obtain a percentage of 10% of each alliance that allows us to continue scaling our project.

Objectives:

  1. Promote agricultural gardens, empowering rural women economically, who are the gear of transformation in their families and communities.
  2. Eliminate the bad welfare policies create by some NGOs, making women who create their own strategies according to their context.
  3. To be a means of information for rural women to know and access to the opportunities that exist in the principal cities of the country.

Will the strategy that rural women created work?

Rural women did have a great success in the town, people supported them knowing that it was chemical-free product and that they were contributing to the local economy. "We realized that we can if we put desire."

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower rural women as the main axis and transforming agent of Colombian rural reality by developing their autonomy and economically empowering them by taking advantage of their agroecological backyards. By achieving this we achieve an impact not only on women, but also on the quality of life of their families, the nutrition of their children, the food security of rural populations and the activation of local economies.

Our Background

Raíces began a year ago, when we realized that rural women are transforming agent in their environment, however, by not earning an income, their role is totally invisible. Statistically, rural women have less access to land and credit, which is the reason why many rural women practice agriculture in a small proportion of their home (agricultural backyards) small spaces that have a great potential worldwide, so much so that they are promoting as a worldwide policy of fight against hunger.
