Nutrilla

Nature's Secret Nutritionist!

Nutrilla is an alternate nutrition source prepared using Hydrilla Verticillata, the fastest growing water weed in the world.

Use Case

15% of the global population not just suffer from a lack of food, but food with the nutritional content essential for a balanced diet. With a goal to efficiently and sustainably nourish the impoverished around the world, Nutrilla is a nutritional supplement made from Hydrilla Verticillata. Typically considered a rapidly growing aquatic weed, lesser known is the fact that Hydilla is jam-packed with essential nutrients, abundantly rich in calcium, iron, several mineral cofactors, the notoriously rare Vitamin B12 and other Vitamin B components. Its widespread availability around the world, coupled with simple solar technology, produces Nutrilla powder, adding a spoonful of which to regular staples like rice, soup or curry in poor households ensures a balanced, healthier diet and life.

Potential

Nutrilla has massive potential to be a leading source of nourishment in underprivileged households around the world, given Hydrilla Verticillata’s widespread availability, ease of growth and a relatively simple procedure to obtain the final product. A go-to product to reduce ailments caused my malnutrition, Nutrilla’s powdery form makes it easy to transport and store, making it handy in disaster situations as a part of relief efforts, keeping individuals healthy even with low supplies at hand. Nutrilla can also be treated as a dietary supplement or used as components of fertilizers and cosmetics. In addition to this, the long term potential we see for Hydrilla is raising its reputation from an everyday weed to a household staple, and training Hydrilla farmers to handle supply.

Business Case

Currently, Nutrilla is in the beta-testing phase, and we are distributing the final product through two NGOs (YPard & Yunus Centre) in the port city of Chittagong. Even when we monetize, we expect Nutrilla to be well within the reach of individuals occupying the bottom of the income pyramid, 600g of which can nourish a family for 10 days costing approximately 2.90 USD. Once the powder gets traction, we intend on selling Nutrilla kits (solar dehydrator & wooden mesh structure) to local communities, enabling them to process their own Nutrilla. Our main USP is the economical price, and the nearest competitor is a UK based brand which sells the powder at $52/kg, well beyond the reach of poor households.

Objectives:

  1. Eliminate malnutrition in developing countries by enhancing nutritional value of existing food staples by 25-40%
  2. Cut down over-consumption and intake of inadequate sources of nutrition by providing cheap, abundant and resource friendly nourishment.
  3. Promote Hydrilla Ventricilatta as a jam packed source of nutrients that enhances quality of life rather than a menacing water weed.
