Fund for Food

Funding the future of food

The Fund for Food allows young people to invest their superannuation contributions into increasing food production in developing countries

Use Case

A young New Zealander has just started making regular superannuation contributions and wants to invest in a fund that will give them a future of financial security and ideally make a positive change in the world. They decide to test out the newly founded Fund for Food so that they can better the lives of small communities in Ethiopia by irrigating their farms, all while making a return on their investment. Once invested, the young investor starts to receive updates not just on their returns, but also the real impact that they are making to the communities that they have invested in. And then by the time the once young investor decides to retire, the community has had the time to pay off the initial investment with a significant return.

Potential

Irrigation in Africa has the potential to boost food production by more than 50%, but only 6% of the total cultivated land is currently irrigated. 60% of Africa's irrigation potential is concentrated in just seven countries, including Ethiopia. Ethiopian agriculture is ideal as the initial investment, as it is the foundation of their economy and the Fund for Food is in line with their existing Growth and Transportation Plan. And investment in irrigation has the potential to contribute ETB 140 billion (USD 5.1 billion) to the economy and give food security to 6 million more households and thus allowing for significant returns.

Business Case

The Fund for Food will be launched through the Thought for Food Challenge to gather the initial investment needed for start up costs. From there the business will be modelled after established investment funds, where there'll be a 1% per annum management fee to cover the costs of running the fund and showcasing the positive impacts of the investments. Where there'll be an initial pilot program linking young New Zealand investors with Ethiopian communities to test the concept. And then once established, the fund can expand its investments to the other developing nations with the greatest irrigation potentials, giving investors an opportunity to choose to which projects they wish to invest in.

Objectives:

  1. Give young people in the developed world an opportunity to make a real difference in the developing world
  2. Invest superannuation contributions into improving agronomics practices of smallholders in developing countries
  3. Increase food production of smallholders in developing countries so that can provide more food for their communities
