Coconut is the main cash crop in more than 14 districts in the Coastal of Kenya, Kilifi district is one of the driest with a 57% poverty rate. Annually 20,000MT of coconut waste is produced. Casemo foods aims to process coconut husk waste into a growing media thereby improving efficiency, food security and water conservation. The media is effective because it holds 10times more water than normal soil, faster crop development and is resistant to pests and diseases.
